I first worked with Howard almost ten years ago, when I was Chief Operating Officer, EMEA, for the iShares business at Barclays Global Investors. Howard was then instrumental in creating large-scale workshops and away days for the entire iShares business, which transformed the way we worked as a team and set a solid foundation of culture (values and behaviours) for the entire business. He also worked with the senior team as we grappled with our business strategy. I quickly established a high-trust relationship with Howard, which has resonated throughout my career since. Sometimes years have passed without contact, then at key moments I have picked up the phone and clicked back in like it was just last week.
Over the past few months, Howard has provided me with a sounding board for strategic decision making during a time when significant changes were happening. The life of a CEO, whilst surrounded by dozens of people, can be a lonely existence when those people look to you for direction – having Howard there, probing the motivations and consequences of key decisions I needed to make, was invaluable.
Howard also gets my highest recommendation as an executive coach. He has a rare ability to distil down a complex business problem or relationship to its core components. From this, we could quickly cut through to what decisions needed to be made. ‘Cutting through’ is probably what Howard has best helped me do.
Howard has showed content expertise, emotional intelligence, and most importantly an honesty in assessment.
I would not hesitate to engage with Howard again; in fact I fully intend to!
